Southern Salmon Patties

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 6-8 servings 1x

Description

Southern Salmon Patties are a crispy, flavorful dish made with canned or fresh salmon, seasonings, and a light binder. Quick, budget-friendly, and perfect as a main dish or sandwich filler.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (14.75 oz) can salmon, drained and flaked (or 2 cups cooked fresh salmon)
  • 1/2 cup finely diced onion
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal or breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise (optional for extra moisture)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional for heat)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon: Drain canned salmon and remove large bones or skin. If using fresh salmon, flake it into small pieces.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine salmon, onion, cornmeal (or breadcrumbs), beaten egg, mayonnaise (if using), Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, parsley, and hot sauce. Mix well.
  3. Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 6-8 patties about 1/2 inch thick. If too wet, add more breadcrumbs or cornmeal.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until shimmering.
  5. Fry the Patties: Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully.
  6. Drain and Serve: Place patties on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with tartar sauce, remoulade, or fresh lemon juice.

Notes

  • No Mayonnaise? Use sour cream or Greek yogurt.
  • Add Heat: Include cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños.
  • Gluten-Free: Use almond flour or gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Different Seasonings: Try Old Bay for a seafood twist.
