Effortless Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe for Easy Family Dinners

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 8-10 slices 1x

Description

  • A comforting and easy sweet potato casserole recipe with a rich, buttery topping. Perfect for family dinners, holiday gatherings, and potlucks. Make ahead-friendly and simple to prepare!

Ingredients

Scale

For the sweet potato base:

  • 3 large sweet potatoes (about 2 ½ to 3 pounds)
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs

For the topping:

  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Sweet Potatoes

Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into chunks. Boil in a large pot of water until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and let cool slightly.

2. Mash and Mix

In a large bowl, mash the sweet potatoes until smooth. Stir in the melted butter, brown sugar, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt. Once combined, add the eggs and mix thoroughly.

3. Assemble the Casserole

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the sweet potato mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading it evenly.

4. Prepare the Topping

In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, and softened butter until crumbly. Stir in the chopped pecans if using. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the sweet potato mixture.

5. Bake

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and slightly crisp. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Nut-Free Option – Skip the pecans or replace them with crushed graham crackers for texture.
  • Marshmallow Topping – Add mini marshmallows on top for a gooey, classic finish.
  • Healthier Version – Use maple syrup instead of brown sugar and coconut oil instead of butter.
  • Dairy-Free Alternative – Swap milk with almond or coconut milk and use a dairy-free butter substitute.
