Description
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 cup whole milk (warm)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or a mix of cheeses)
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- ¼ teaspoon paprika (optional)
- ½ teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional, for depth of flavor)
Instructions
- Make a Roux – In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute until smooth and slightly golden.
- Add Milk – Gradually pour in the warm milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue stirring until thickened, about 2-3 minutes.
- Melt the Cheese – Lower the heat to low and slowly add shredded cheese in small handfuls, stirring after each addition until fully melted.
- Season the Sauce – Stir in salt, garlic powder, paprika, and Dijon mustard if using. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Serve Warm – Remove from heat and drizzle over fries or use as a dip. If the sauce thickens, add a splash of milk to reach the desired consistency.
Notes
- Spicy Kick – Add cayenne pepper or hot sauce.
- Smoky Flavor – Use smoked paprika or smoked cheddar cheese.
- Nacho-Style – Stir in pickled jalapeño juice for a tangy twist.
- Extra Creamy – Add a tablespoon of cream cheese for richness.
