  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

1. Prepare the Turnips

  • Peel and cube the turnips into small chunks.
  • Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the turnips are fork-tender.
  • Drain well and mash until smooth.

2. Mix the Batter

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix the mashed turnips with melted butter, beaten egg, flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  • Stir until well combined and smooth.

3. Assemble and Bake

  • Transfer the mixture to a greased 1.5-quart baking dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the additional melted butter, then sprinkle over the top.
  • Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and slightly puffed.

4. Serve and Enjoy

  • Let the turnip puff cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Enjoy it warm as a side dish with your favorite main course.

Notes

  • Cheesy Turnip Puff: Add 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar or Parmesan cheese to the mixture for a richer flavor.
  • Herbed Topping: Mix in dried herbs like thyme or rosemary with the breadcrumbs for added depth.
  • Sweet Variation: Increase the brown sugar to 2 tablespoons and add a dash of cinnamon for a sweeter, soufflé-like dish.
