Description
Southern Salmon Patties are a crispy, flavorful dish made with canned or fresh salmon, seasonings, and a light binder. Quick, budget-friendly, and perfect as a main dish or sandwich filler.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 (14.75 oz) can salmon, drained and flaked (or 2 cups cooked fresh salmon)
- 1/2 cup finely diced onion
- 1/2 cup cornmeal or breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise (optional for extra moisture)
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional for heat)
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare the Salmon: Drain canned salmon and remove large bones or skin. If using fresh salmon, flake it into small pieces.
- Mix the Ingredients: In a bowl, combine salmon, onion, cornmeal (or breadcrumbs), beaten egg, mayonnaise (if using), Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, parsley, and hot sauce. Mix well.
- Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into 6-8 patties about 1/2 inch thick. If too wet, add more breadcrumbs or cornmeal.
- Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium heat until shimmering.
- Fry the Patties: Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Flip carefully.
- Drain and Serve: Place patties on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with tartar sauce, remoulade, or fresh lemon juice.
Notes
- No Mayonnaise? Use sour cream or Greek yogurt.
- Add Heat: Include cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños.
- Gluten-Free: Use almond flour or gluten-free breadcrumbs.
- Different Seasonings: Try Old Bay for a seafood twist.
