Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon red food coloring (gel preferred)
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until combined. The dough will be thick and slightly sticky.
Step 2: Chill the Dough
- Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This helps firm up the dough and enhances the flavor.
Step 3: Shape and Coat the Cookies
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of dough and roll them into balls.
- Generously coat each dough ball in powdered sugar, ensuring full coverage.
Step 4: Bake to Perfection
- Place the coated dough balls onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the cookies are set but still slightly soft in the center.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Notes
- Cream Cheese Filling – Add a surprise center by stuffing the dough with a small cube of cream cheese.
- Chocolate Chip Twist – Mix in white or dark chocolate chips for extra decadence.
- Spiced Version – A pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg adds warmth and depth.
