Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups crushed potato chips (sturdy variety like kettle chips)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as pecans or almonds)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Baking Sheet
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Spread half of the crushed potato chips evenly over the parchment paper.
Step 2: Make the Toffee
- In a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Stir in the sugar and salt, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches 300°F (hard crack stage) on a candy thermometer.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Step 3: Assemble the Toffee
- Quickly pour the hot toffee mixture over the crushed potato chips, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
- Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top while the toffee is still hot, allowing them to melt.
- Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee.
- Sprinkle the remaining potato chips and nuts (if using) over the chocolate.
Step 4: Cool and Break Into Pieces
- Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature or place it in the refrigerator for faster setting.
- Once hardened, break into bite-sized pieces and enjoy!
Notes
- Dark Chocolate Version: Swap semi-sweet chocolate for dark chocolate.
- White Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle melted white chocolate over the hardened toffee.
- Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the toffee mixture for a slight heat contrast.
