  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • ½ cup buttermilk

For the frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring, mixing until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk. Mix until just combined.

Step 2: Bake the Cookies

  1. Using a cookie scoop, drop dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  2. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are set.
  3. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Step 3: Make the Frosting

  1. In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, mixing until creamy and spreadable.

Step 4: Frost and Serve

  1. Once the cookies have completely cooled, spread or pipe the cream cheese frosting on top.
  2. Optionally, sprinkle with red velvet cake crumbs or festive sprinkles.
  3. Serve and enjoy!
