  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring
  • ½ cup buttermilk

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Making the Cookies:

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until fully combined.
  5. Incorporate Dry Ingredients & Buttermilk: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, until fully combined.
  6. Scoop & Bake: Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until set.
  7. Cool: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Making the Frosting:

  1. Beat the Cream Cheese & Butter: In a bowl, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar & Vanilla: Gradually mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until fluffy.

Assembling the Cookies:

  1. Once completely cool, spread or pipe the frosting onto each cookie.
  2. Optional: Garnish with sprinkles, red velvet crumbs, or a drizzle of melted chocolate.
