Instructions
Making the Cookies:
- Preheat & Prepare: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
- Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Mix in egg, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until fully combined.
- Incorporate Dry Ingredients & Buttermilk: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with buttermilk, until fully combined.
- Scoop & Bake: Drop tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until set.
- Cool: Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
Making the Frosting:
- Beat the Cream Cheese & Butter: In a bowl, beat softened cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Add Powdered Sugar & Vanilla: Gradually mix in powdered sugar and vanilla extract until fluffy.
Assembling the Cookies:
- Once completely cool, spread or pipe the frosting onto each cookie.
- Optional: Garnish with sprinkles, red velvet crumbs, or a drizzle of melted chocolate.
