Comforting Turnip and Apple Casserole

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 4-6 servings 1x

Description

A cozy and comforting turnip and apple casserole with layers of tender turnips, sweet apples, and a creamy, spiced sauce. Perfect as a holiday side or a hearty weeknight dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large turnips, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 apples (Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the onion until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat.
  3. Layer the Casserole
In the greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced turnips, followed by half of the apple slices. Sprinkle with a portion of the sautéed onions. Repeat with the remaining turnips, apples, and onions.
  4. Make the Creamy Mixture
In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream (or milk), cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour evenly over the layered ingredients.
  5. Add Toppings
If using cheese, sprinkle it over the casserole. Top with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers for a crispy finish.
  6. Bake Until Golden
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the turnips are fork-tender.
  7. Serve and Enjoy
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

  • Add a protein boost – Stir in cooked bacon or sausage.
  • Use different cheeses – Swap cheddar for Gruyère or Parmesan.
  • Enhance the crunch – Mix chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts into the topping.
  • Make it dairy-free – Use coconut milk and dairy-free butter or oil.
