Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large turnips, peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 apples (Honeycrisp or Fuji), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a medium-sized baking dish with butter or cooking spray. - Sauté the Aromatics
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and sauté the onion until soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat. - Layer the Casserole
In the greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced turnips, followed by half of the apple slices. Sprinkle with a portion of the sautéed onions. Repeat with the remaining turnips, apples, and onions. - Make the Creamy Mixture
In a small bowl, whisk together the heavy cream (or milk), cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Pour evenly over the layered ingredients. - Add Toppings
If using cheese, sprinkle it over the casserole. Top with breadcrumbs or crushed crackers for a crispy finish. - Bake Until Golden
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and the turnips are fork-tender. - Serve and Enjoy
Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
Notes
- Add a protein boost – Stir in cooked bacon or sausage.
- Use different cheeses – Swap cheddar for Gruyère or Parmesan.
- Enhance the crunch – Mix chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts into the topping.
- Make it dairy-free – Use coconut milk and dairy-free butter or oil.
