For the Bread:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
For the Cinnamon Swirl:
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Oven and Pan
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line with parchment paper. - Mix Dry Ingredients
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg. Set aside. - Cream Butter and Sugar
In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract. - Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Alternately add the flour mixture and buttermilk to the wet ingredients, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir until just combined; do not overmix. - Prepare the Cinnamon Swirl
In a small bowl, mix granulated sugar and cinnamon. - Layer the Batter
Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over it. Add remaining batter and top with remaining cinnamon-sugar. Use a knife to gently swirl the mixture. - Bake
Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. - Make the Glaze
Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled bread.
Notes
- Add 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts for crunch.
- Swap the cinnamon swirl for a cocoa-sugar mixture for a chocolate twist.
- Use pumpkin spice instead of nutmeg for a fall-inspired version.
- Make it dairy-free by using almond milk with vinegar instead of buttermilk and coconut oil instead of butter.
