  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk

Instructions

Prepare the Apple Filling

  • In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  • Add sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir well.
  • Cook for 5-7 minutes until apples soften.
  • Dissolve cornstarch in 1 tablespoon of water and stir into the apple mixture until thickened.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract. Let cool slightly.

2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Lightly flour a surface and roll out the puff pastry slightly.
  • Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.

3. Create the Braid

  • Cut diagonal slits on both sides of the pastry, about 1 inch apart, leaving the center intact.
  • Spoon the cooled apple mixture down the center.
  • Fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braided effect.

4. Apply the Egg Wash

  • Whisk the egg and milk together in a small bowl.
  • Brush the egg wash over the pastry for a golden finish.

5. Bake the Pastry

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly.

6. Serve and Enjoy

  • Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or caramel sauce.
