Ingredients

Scale

For the cake:

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup black cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk
  • ½ cup hot coffee (or hot water)

For the frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Oven and Pans: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, black cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: Beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the batter, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  6. Add Hot Coffee: Slowly pour in hot coffee, mixing until batter is smooth.
  7. Bake the Cake: Divide batter between pans and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the Cakes: Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Make the Frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in vanilla and heavy cream until fluffy.
  10. Assemble the Cake: Spread frosting over one cake layer, place second layer on top, and frost the entire cake.
  11. Serve and Enjoy: Slice and serve this rich Black Velvet Cake.
